Brons vs. Answering Services for Garages

Live answering services and Brons's voice agent compared for garages: what each does with a call, what it costs and when each one fits.

It is 5:20 PM on a Thursday. The counter has gone home. A customer calls to ask whether his car will be ready in the morning. The answering service picks up in three rings, takes his name and number, and promises a call back. At 8:05 the next morning the counter finds the message, checks the planner and calls him. He is already on the bus.

That is the honest difference between an answering service and a voice agent. Both pick up. Only one of them answers.

Quick comparison

| | Brons | Live answering service | | --- | --- | --- | | Who answers | A voice agent trained on workshop calls | A human receptionist working from your script | | Availability | 24/7, one caller or fifty at once | 24/7; capacity depends on staffing | | Reads your planner | Yes, and writes bookings back | No, unless you share a calendar for simple slots | | Car-ready status and quotes | Read from the planner and your price list | Message taken for a call-back | | Breakdown handling | Your rules, transfer to the mechanic on duty with a summary | Message or transfer by script | | Languages | English, Dutch and German | Depends on the provider and plan | | Pricing | From $299 per month, tied to outcomes, no minutes | Plans by monthly minutes or per call, with overages |

What an answering service does well

A live answering service gives you a human voice and a fast pickup. AnswerConnect says it answers 99 percent of calls within one to four rings. Ruby says it answers in under 10 seconds on average and serves more than 15,000 businesses. Both take messages, capture leads and, if you share a calendar, book simple appointments. For a business whose calls are mostly "please have someone call me", that is often enough, and some customers simply prefer a person.

Where the message stops

A workshop's calls are not mostly "please call me back". They are "is my car ready", "what will the timing belt cost", "can I move Thursday to Friday" and "the engine light is on, can I still drive". Each needs your planner, your price list or your rules. A receptionist without those has to write it down. The caller waits for the call-back, the counter makes the call-back, and the busiest hour of the morning starts with yesterday's messages.

Marchex found up to 21 percent of automotive service calls at large operators unanswered, dropped or mishandled. CDK Global's 2025 survey of more than 2,000 service customers found four in ten ran into hold times, transfers, call-backs or no answer, and those whose call went unanswered gave a Net Promoter Score of 26.7, against an average of 59.

What the minutes cost

Answering services sell time. Housecall Pro's July 2026 guide puts typical small-business plans at $135 to $400 a month, quotes $1.50 per minute and $2.50 per call as common examples, and warns that overages can run two to three times the base rate. AnswerConnect lists 200 minutes for $350 a month on its entry plan, with extra minutes at $2.50; Ruby prices its plans by monthly receptionist minutes. Car Wars data reported by CBT News in July 2026 puts the average service scheduling call at about four and a half minutes, so 200 minutes is roughly 44 booked appointments before overages. A tire-season week can use that up in days.

How Brons differs

Brons answers on the first ring, in Dutch, German or English, and completes the call. It reads the planner, books the right job with the right technician and duration, tells the caller when the car is ready, reads back a quote, and follows the breakdown rules your workshop manager approved. Anything outside scope goes to a person with the transcript and a summary. Every call is written to the customer record.

Pricing does not count minutes. A monthly fee from $299 covers the agent, the console, unlimited users, setup and support, and follows the outcomes we agree up front. In a month with no results you pay nothing. Data is stored in the EU or the US. Most workshops are live within 48 hours on their existing number.

Who should choose an answering service

  • Workshops whose after-hours calls are rare and mostly messages
  • Owners who want a human voice on every call, whatever it costs per minute
  • Businesses with a simple calendar and no planner to read from

Who should choose Brons

  • Garages, dealerships, body shops and tire centers with peak-hour and after-hours volume
  • Workshops that want bookings in the planner, not messages in an inbox
  • Groups that need one standard across locations and an audit trail
  • Owners who want to pay for booked jobs rather than minutes on hold

Verdict

An answering service keeps the phone from ringing out. A voice agent keeps the customer from waiting. If most of your calls need your planner, your prices or your rules, Brons resolves them on the call and costs the same whether the week is quiet or it is the first frost of October.

Frequently asked questions

Can Brons take over from our answering service?

Yes. Forward the same number to Brons. It handles bookings, car-ready status, quotes and opening hours end to end and transfers the rest to your team with context. If Brons cannot take a call, it rings through to your team.

Do customers mind talking to a voice agent?

Brons says who it is at the start of every call and moves to a person whenever the caller asks. At Autobedrijf van Nuland, more than six in ten calls were completed without staff and bookings rose 23 percent over 8,420 calls in May and June 2026.
